General Introduction to Soul Music (Definition and History)
In various music styles, many people might be more familiar with pop, classic, and jazz music. Here, we would like to introduce one specific music style, which also has a great influence on music development and has a widespread popularity— soul music.
Soul music is a music style which fuses gospel and blues. It combines both the sacred and the secular. In soul music, the melodies are featured with its emotional vocal, twirls, backup chorus, handclaps, body moves, and rhythmic instrumental music. It is hard to define the exact year when soul was created. What we know is that soul started its influence in late 1950s in the United States, and it popularized in 1960s. In 1970s, soul music was smoothed; in 1980s and 1990s, soul was rooted in part of pop music.
Motown Records, and Fame Studios in Florence, Alabama, are considered having an important role in soul music recording. As to singers, in 1950s, James Brown and Ray Charles were outstanding soul singers. People admire their achievements and regard them as the Godfather of Soul and the Father of Soul. They paved the way of soul music. In 1960s, Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, showed her brilliance in soul singing. In 1980s and 1990s, singers, such as Whitney Houston, were also affected by soul music.
In 1980s and later, some musicians fused soul with hip hop music, and soul influences contemporary R&B, and House (a dance genre). Soul also has great influence on funk, neo-soul, pop music, and other music styles. People can see the marvelous performances and widespread impacts of soul in the halls of music.
